Enhancing Geography Education in Washington State

Here's an interesting map; it's of recipients of federal subsidies from the 2002 Farm Bill. However, the location might not be that familiar:

And a satellite image of about the same area:

That's right--it's downtown Manhattan. The largest circles represent a $250,000 subsidy in taxpayer money...

What's the deal, so is this a story of misappropriated funds and fraud. Is this the mailing address of the recipients, or is this new urban agriculture?

The USDA's point in producing the map was that subsidies are not always going to the places we think they are--you raise a good question about mailing address vs. actual physical location of the farm. I think the USDA's point is that it's pretty strange to see millions in subsidies going to the financial heart of America, some of the most expensive real estate on the planet.
