The regular meeting of the Washington Geographic Alliance (WGA) Board of Directors was called to order at 6:42 p.m. by Tim Schultz in the home of Richard Kennedy and Heidi Morgan, 18825 6th Avenue SW, Normandy Park, Washington.

Roll Call

Present: President Tim Schultz of Green River Community College (GRCC), Vice-President Meghan Hoyer of St. Philomena School, Treasurer Heidi Morgan of the National Geographic Society's (NGS) Grosvenor Council, Secretary Richard Kennedy of the NGS's Grosvenor Council, and Director Pat LeRoy of St. Francis of Assisi School.

Approval of Minutes for July 3, 2008

A motion to approve the draft minutes of the Board of Directors meeting of July 3, 2008 was made by Tim and seconded by Pat. The motion passed unanimously.

Action Item Review

Tim has completed all action items related to the Summer Institute with the exception of Kyle Dye's report that is pending. His semi-annual Public Engagement Coordinator (PEC) Activity Report is pending. Due to Midwest flooding, our original pencil order has been delayed. Additional information has been sent to GRCC so that an order for our 5,000 branded pencils can be made. The meetings with Judy Hartmann and Frank Chopp still need to be scheduled. The Boeing grant application is pending. Western Washington University has no venue in the Seattle-Tacoma area to present the two-credit Geographic Information Systems Survey (EGEO-250). The 5-year plan is on tonight's agenda. The list of schools offering Advanced Placement in Geography and the Assessment of Geographic knowledge are both still pending.

Heidi obtained a copy of the International Baccalaureate reading list used at Mt. Rainier High School for the summer of 2008:

The 5-year plan is on tonight's agenda. GRCC has sent Heidi information needed for the IRS Form 990A.

Meghan has completed all action items related to the Summer Institute. Meghan is still having trouble getting a reply from Newspapers in Education. To get her email working, she will call Richard to make an appointment. Meghan will be working with NGS to get materials to distribute at the Puyallup Fair and to assure delivery of the giant North America map.

Pat has completed all action items related to the Summer Institute. Pat's registration at the OneCause web site is pending. Locating a suitable location at St. Francis School to have a giant world map painted is on hold until the fall.

Richard continues to work on a revision to our travel policy. Tim was emailed the approved version of the WGA logo and a flyer on our web site and OneCause. A sympathy card was sent to Dan Beaupre due to the passing of his father-in-law. The cloth carrying bags were delivered to the Summer Institute for distribution to the participants. Stan Cross said in a telephone call that we can give materials like books and pencils away at the Puyallup Fair. The Giant North American map is on the agenda. The meetings with Judy Hartmann and Frank Chopp still need to be scheduled. Senator Murray's cosponsorship of S.727 still has not appeared on the THOMAS web site. After incorporating revisions, Richard submitted his application to the UW Certificate Program in Fundraising Management. The 5-year plan is on tonight's agenda.

Treasurer's Report

The checking account balance as of July 31, 2008 is $460.65. There was no account activity since the last report.

Richard asked Mary Armstrong's strategy leader Terry M. Mutter for status on the effort to get WGA eligible for the Boeing Company Gift Matching program. As of August 5, he has not replied.

GRCC rules prevent us from using grant monies to purchase food outside of their facilities. Tim's prior request for use of our funds to supply the Summer Institute attendees with snacks such as ice cream was approved by the board. Tim presented the following receipts from the Summer Institute for reimbursement:

A motion to approve the reimbursement of $99.77 to Tim for Summer Institute expenses was made by Meghan and seconded by Pat. Tim recused himself from the vote. The motion passed unanimously. Tim was issued WGA check #1001 for $99.77.

WGA Endowment Funding

A meeting with the Speaker of the House, Frank Chopp needs to be scheduled. His 43rd Legislative District includes the University of Washington. We should enlist the support of Professor James Harrington, Jr. of the University of Washington who gave supportive testimony for us in Olympia.

In addition, a meeting needs to be scheduled with Judy Hartmann, Executive Policy Advisor for K-12 Education, in the Governor's office to discuss placing the endowment funding in the Governor's budget.

What elements from the Summer Institute are you most likely to incorporate in your teaching?

  1. Columbia River/Salmon population issue Integration of literature and geography Use of websites and "freebies"
  2. Enlarged geographic concepts and vocabulary integrated more completely and enlarged into science and social studies, probably will design an issues oriented science simulation with strong geography elements based on ideas inspired by this week with Claire
  3. Integration of Geography in my classroom. Help teachers find ways to integrate Geography into things they are already doing. They need ways to teach things that they think are important into what they are doing they have no time to "add" another "different" Content.
  4. Walking tours of communities, with all sorts of other additions to it, (like looking for certain characteristics). The literature books suggestions were excellent and highly useful to my primary classroom. Also I really appreciated the geography background of Washington I learned in the 5 days.
  5. Field work, mapping, salmon, dam issues. Each day was jammed packed with great ideas. I'll be getting back from DC and building lessons from what I've collected. I can't express how good this was. Last year was superb; this year was superb times 100.
  6. Environmental geography; Human impacts on environmental issues at a local, regional, and global level. The websites Meghan gave will be great for student projects in my biology classes.
  7. Local to global to local using more pictures from around the world from the resources given definitely more focus on the significance of the Columbia and the dams on them
  8. The literature will be used to help integrate more geography into my classroom. It can also me a springboard into discussions.
  9. I am anxious to use the resources that Megan and Tim shared. I also plan to do a walking fieldtrip to downtown Burien and look at my area with a new eye towards geography.
  10. Incorporating geography in literature
  11. Salmon, stewardship of the earth, water sheds, mapping
  12. The importance of field work...the concept that geography is connected to equity issues...the joy of looking at our world from many angles.
  13. Mapping! I really liked the comparisons of different cultural landscapes!
  14. Tools - such as projects and lessons
  15. *Salmon and asking the 4th grade to help the kindergartners with knowledge *incorporating Pat's presentation - literature in geography
  16. More knowledge will be shared on my landform and community unit, as well as mapping skills with my kiddos
  17. Teaching ideas. Ideas for creating "field work".
  18. Pat's entire presentation can be used in my class. Gina's presentation can be modified for the primary grades. Tim's presentation can be modified for the intermediate and middle school grades, and I will share this info with the.
  19. I plan to be using WAY more local maps and geographic factors within US history. I will also do a better job of using correct geographic terms within US history, and not just in Human Geography,
  20. Local mapping and personal connections
  21. I am now acquainted with the standards and can attempt to integrate them with my curriculum.

What concepts/events from the Institute are you most likely to remember six months to one year from now?

  1. Teach the watershed! Salmon are special. Rethink those damn dams.
  2. The complexity of water- who has it, who needs it, who will be able to get it, how that affects others, how it affects environment
  3. Salmon and water issues. Mapping, and socio-economic inequalities in the regards to the cultural landscape
  4. It is easy to incorporate maps and environmental/physical geography into a science course. Geography is an over reaching field that can be adopted into different subject areas/grade levels.
  5. Fieldwork, mapping, human/environment interaction of water/dams/Columbia
  6. I really learned a lot through all of the events. I know that I will approach geography in my classroom with a different attitude. I also plan to start a Geography Club at my school.
  7. The water portion. Watershed Columbia River issues and Salmon.
  8. The salmon issues had a lot of impact on me. I would like to increase awareness on this issue.
  9. Literature books suggestions. Comparison between White Center and W. Seattle. Columbia River Basin information
  10. Map skills/field trips
  11. Urban amenities, periphery/core, cultural landscape, physical geographic interactions with human impact
  12. (1) Local to global to local (2) Terminology given on the handouts (3) Columbia/Snake River, salmon, dams
  13. Water! Also, Mapping cultural landscapes, looking at cultural landscapes with new eyes, McMansions and some of the other new vocabulary, using Google Maps.
  14. Salmon information and the need to better protect our waterways. Very interested in the information on the Columbia River
  15. Environmental impacts of dams to salmon and the importance of younger children knowing about geography and not just the continents of the world
  16. The issues concerning the geography today. ie. salmon, dams, water rights
  17. I think I will look at the cultural landscape differently as to reading "purpose" and what it says about "what is this space for?" I will also be thinking more about the entire river system as per Gina's talk. Honestly, there was a lot I will remember, and not just for Human Geography.
  18. Salmon, rivers, local geo
  19. I have a renewed interest in our rivers, their impact, and our interactions with that environment.

Please leave any comments or questions for us and we'll do our best to address your needs.

  1. Okay, here are my ideas... I'd like to develop a packet to give my students who leave class for trips or visits their home country. Once I've got this developed, I'd like to share it. We should have a lists of... top ten books for a primary geography classroom (intermediate, high school, home) Website list 3 quick geography things to do with your students today.... map or blow up globe... all this stuff in a packet for new teachers, with an invitation to join the alliance.
  2. I found the institute very interesting. However, as a primary teacher, there wasn't a lot that was friendly to primary kids without serious modification on my part. I understand that the point of the institute was to educate us as adults in geography, but I did miss that. On the other hand, I did learn a huge amount personally.
  3. Please contact me about presenting at professional development for geography and science (physical/environmental geography). I am also interested in creating a secondary geography/environmental curriculum that could be published. I would also like to present at science workshops like NAME or WSTA.
  4. I'm want to spread the word of the WGA and geography ed in my school, district, and state. I'll need help.
  5. You did an awesome job and the food was great. Thank you
  6. I would like to become more involved. Especially in getting information and education to teachers in Eastern Washington and pre-service teachers. I thought it was better when we all stayed together. More meaningful conversations, to me, took place after institute hours. Thank you for inviting me back.
  7. A great institute. I wish I could devote more class time to geography.
  8. It was really great, Tim. I can't really think of any suggestions for improvement. I thought the balance between 'lecture' and activities, tours and information was perfect. Thanks!
  9. Very interested in presenting on behalf of WGA or at Summer Institute
  10. Thank you very much for this opportunity. It was a great experience and I learned a lot.
  11. I am absolutely intrigued with the volume of information and surely appreciate the wealth of knowledge that Tim shared with us. I look forward to sharing with my 2nd graders
  12. I truly enjoyed this workshop and this week was WAY more than I had hoped. I will be strongly advocating for the continued growth of this group, and I do not plan to be passive in this.

NGS Geography Action! Conference

Meghan submitted the following report:

"From Monday, July 21 through Thursday, July 24, 2008 I attended the Geography Action! Coordinator's Institute in Washington D.C. The theme for the 2008-2009 school year is 'Mapping the Americas.' I was trained in mapping techniques that can be used in K-12 classrooms. Some of the topics included: types of maps, map parts, comparing maps, and cross-curricular use of maps. This year National Geographic has created a map toolkit for GA! Coordinators and Alliance Coordinators to distribute along with maps of North & South America emphasizing Geography Awareness Week. The goal of the toolkits is for K-12 classroom teachers to have a resource to teach mapping activities and have a 'Mapping the Americas' event in their school. The toolkit and map also highlight Geography Awareness Week.

During the Institute I also received training on working with the media and making more community connections. The GA! Coordinators went on guided tours of the Library of Congress: Maps Collection and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. We received resources to help us implement our 'Mapping the Americas' events and to share with our colleagues during presentations. During our visit to NGS headquarters, we learned about the All Roads Film Project and saw excerpts from four of the films in the project.

While at the Costa Rican Embassy, Chris Shearer, introduced Jonathan B. Tourtellot: NG Photographer, Director, and Geotourism Editor of National Geographic Traveler. He is the first Director of The Center for Sustainable Destinations. While Jonathan was talking about sustainability, he mentioned that NGS is working in collaboration with a few states on sustainability of national parks or resources. Their goal is to get teachers involved in these sustainability issues in their state. One of the states he mentioned was Washington. This really interests me as another way to work the WGA with NGS and WA State teachers to raise Geography Awareness through sustainability and geotourism. I had a few moments to talk to Chris Shearer more about what Geotourism is and he sent me a link to the website: National Geographic's Center for Sustainable Destinations. http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/sustainable/about_csd.html"

Giant Washington State Map

Richard contacted NGS Maps Vice President of Operations Kevin P. Allen about the status of the estimate for the giant Washington State map. To date, no reply has been received.

The WGA may want to explore having the University of Washington's Department of Geography creating the base maps for the giant Washington State map.

Tim suggested that Raven Maps & Images of Medford, Oregon might be able to supply an appropriate base map at a scale of 1:500,000. Their Washington State maps are described at http://www.ravenmaps.com/prostores/servlet/Detail?no=54 and http://www.ravenmaps.com/prostores/servlet/Detail?no=71.

Branded Items

Richard has emailed Bonnie Christian the details for the order for 5,000 pencils customized with our logo, name, and web address with Office Depot (their item #833360). The cost will be $950 plus tax and shipping.

UW Certificate Program in Fundraising Management

Richard has submitted his application for the UW one-year certificate program in fundraising management starting this September. Richard's employer, Boeing, will cover the cost of the entire program (approximately $2,500) and textbooks. Per a motion adopted at last month's board meeting, Richard's mileage and parking will be reimbursed by the WGA.

Senator Murray's Cosponsorship of S.727

Richard had previously met with Senator Murray's staff requesting that she become a cosponsor for S.727 Teaching Geography is Fundamental Act."

Senator Patty Murray's Legislative Assistant Kathryn H. Young wrote Richard on July 3 "I sent a request to Senator Cochran's office that day. Sometimes it takes time for the online version of the bill to be updated...I'll check to see if it's showing up in the senate version".

Richard has been checking the THOMAS online service but Senator Murray still does not appear as a cosponsor. Richard contacted Kathryn H. Young for an update but she is out of the office until August 28.
